Matthias

Dr. Matthias Bartels is an expert in local and regional development and governance, water and land use and climate change mitigation and adaptation. He holds a Ph. D. in Agricultural Science from the Technical University of Berlin and a M.Sc. in geography. Beginning his GIZ (formerly GTZ) career in 1985 he has worked in numerous projects in South Africa, Egypt and Indonesia; his experience involves senior positions at the GIZ headquarters in Germany in various technical and regional departments or Program Manager in the Strengthening Local Governance Program in South Africa. Since 2010, he has served as Coordinator of the Regional Programme on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Water Sector in the MENA Region (ACCWaM), based in Cairo.

Gerhard

Gerhard

Dr. Gerhard Lichtenthaeler (PhD) studied Arabic, ethnography and geography at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Between 2004, and until the political upheaval in 2011, he worked for GIZ in the water sector in Yemen where he focused on decentralized water resources management. In 2011 he moved to Egypt where he now works as an advisor to the ACCWaM. Special interests include conflict resolution in community water management and the social adaptive capacity of local communities to deal with water scarcity. Lichtenthaeler is author of Political Ecology and the Role of Water: Environment, Society and Economy in Northern Yemen (2003). Ashgate Publishing.

Hammou

Hammou

Dr. Hammou Laamrani is holding a PhD in Environment and Water Management from Copenhagen University, Denmark and an MSc from Institut Agronomique et Veterinaire Hassan II/ Faculty of Sciences, University Mohamed 5th, Rabat, Morocco.His field of expertise is water and environment policy in the Arab World and Subsaharan Africa.

He worked for The International Water Management Institute (Sri Lanka and Ghana, www.iwmi.org ) as a researcher, and then he joined The Canadian International Development Research Centre (www.idrc.ca); where he served as senior program officer for the programme Rural Poverty and Environment and then for the Programme Agriculture and Food Security.

Currently, he is a Senior Advisor to GIZ/ACCWaM Program in addition to being a Water and Climate Change Expert/Advisor to the Technical Secretariat of The Arab Ministerial Water Council Department of Environment, Housing, Water Resources and Sustainable Development,Economic Affairs, League of Arab States (www.las.org), Cairo, Egypt. Moreover, Dr. Hammou is co-leading the regional policy Dialogue on Nexus Energy, Water and Food Security in the League of Arab States, Economic Affairs.  

Nisreen

Nisreen

Dr. Nisreen Lahham is an advisor for ACCWaM and the GIZ sector programme International Water Policy and Infrastructure (WaPo). Besides, she represents the MENA region in the Nexus Dialogue Programme. She is the former Executive Manager of the Center for Futures Studies (CFS) at the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), the think tank of the Egyptian Cabinet. She also worked as a planning expert and a Strategic Planning Trainer at the League of Arab States. Dr. Nisreen is an affiliate to the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in Egypt, and a member of the Futures Studies Council. She holds a Ph.D. in urban planning from the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University in Cairo and had her B.Sc. degree in Architecture from the University of Jordan. She is an editor of North Africa Horizons Newsletter,and has been involved in several regional and international projects, and published several scientific papers, reports and studies, in the field of futures studies, sustainable development, environmental planning, food security, and green economy.

Abdullah

Abdullah

Dr. Abdullah Droubi is a regional consultant for ACCWaM. He holds a PhD in water geochemistry from university of Strasbourg France (1977) and an engineering diploma in hydrogeology from EcoleNationalesupérieure de GéologieAppliquée, Poly technique Institute, Nancy France in 1973 and BSc. from the Faculty of Science, Damascus, Syria, 1970.  He is the former director of water resources studies department at the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands –ACSAD (2002 -2011). Before that Dr.Droubi worked as an expert in the field of water resources management at the same department at ACSAD from 1978 and up to 2002.  He was involved in most of the projects and studies that ACSAD has implemented and conducted in the field of water resources assessment, evaluation and management in all the Arab countries. Abdullah Droubi has been involved in several regional and international projects regarding climate change impacts, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and published more than 100 scientific papers, reports and studies. Since January 2012 he has supported the ACCWaM programme as a regional consultant.

Maha

Maha

Maha Ezz is working as a Senior Administrative Professional for ACCWaM and another GIZ regional programme (MFMR), Maha is responsible for financial and office management and can draw on many years of working experience at GIZ, having joined the organisation in 1985. She received her secondary education at Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule (DEO) in Cairo, went on to study philosophy and psychology at the University of Alexandria and also gained an IATA international consultant diploma.

Khaled

Khaled

Khaled Karam works as a Junior Accounting Professional for ACCWaM and another GIZ regional programme (MFMR). Khaled holds a B.A. in Accounting and Auditing from Cairo University. He has been working for GIZ since 2009 and joined the ACCWaM team in October 2011.

Yara

Yara

Yara Elkorety joined GIZ and the ACCWaM team in October 2013. Yara works as a Junior Administrative Professional for ACCWaM and another GIZ regional programme (MFMR). Yara holds a B.A. in Political Science from the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University. She attended courses in Human Rights and Euro Mediterranean Relations, speaks Arabic, English, French and currently learning German
