ACCWaM National WS on Climate Mainstreaming, Climate Proofing and International Climate Finance

Cairo, 7 - 9 December 2014. A national training workshop entitled Climate Mainstreaming, Climate Proofing and International Climate Finance was held by the GIZ programme "Adaptation to Climate Change in the MENA Region" (ACCWaM). The workshop brought together 45 participants from several public institutions: the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of State for Environment, the Agriculture Research Center, the National Water Research Center, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning.  In addition, two representatives from the media were present.

This workshop was based on the results of stakeholder consultations that were held in Cairo in October 2014, and is part of continued activities of the GIZ ACCWaM in 2014 and 2015 for developing capacities to reinforce climate resilience of the Arab Region’s water sector and closely interlinked institutions, the private sector and civil society.


The three day workshop presented the following topics:

Day 1: Climate Information and Climate Mainstreaming at Strategic / Policy Level

Day 2: Climate Mainstreaming at Project / Investment Level (Climate Proofing)

Day 3: International Climate Finance for Adaptation Measures in the Water Sector.


Welcome and opening remarks were given by Mr Sebastian Lesch, Head of German Development Cooperation in Egypt. He expressed the German Government’s pleasure to partner with the League of Arab States as an integrative regional organization in the Arab Region and their commitment to continue in mutual cooperation.

Mr Lesch also emphasized that German development cooperation delivers on institutional strengthening, knowledge sharing, exchange of international best practice, technology and systems advise, dialog on policies, strategies and institutional solutions. It is to be noted that all these components are reflected in the ACCWaM programme.
